A fire is easier to control when occupants know what to do. In offices as in public venues, a few habits greatly reduce the risks.
1. Keep emergency exits clear
Boxes, chairs or furniture must never block corridors or exit doors. A blocked exit can cost precious minutes during an evacuation.
2. Check access to extinguishers
Every extinguisher must be visible, signposted and accessible. Also check the date of its last inspection, shown on the label.
3. Do not overload power sockets
Daisy-chained power strips and damaged cables are a common cause of fires. Unplug unused devices at the end of the day.
4. Hold an evacuation drill
Regular drills let everyone know the assembly point and the shortest way out. They also reveal what needs fixing.
5. Appoint fire wardens
Trained staff guide occupants, check that nobody is left inside and meet the emergency services.
